I always just took it, as with a lot of Dylan's lyrics, very

You can see the window Bob crawled out of on display in the basement
of the Hibbing Public Library.

Yeah, it's a shame and shortsightedly stupid the way the owner's
dismantling
that whole Hibbing house, window by window, door by door, bathtub by
light
fixture. I understand he's going to start on the kitchen next.

Meanwhile the eaves are rotting and the roof leaks. It won't be that
long
before there is no more "boyhood home" for the tourists to see.

I think there's something wrong with that type of idolatry.

So was Bob engaging in idolatry when he visited the boyhood homes of
Elvis,
Neil Young, and the Beatles? I don't think there's anything wrong with
preserving these kinds of places for historical understanding. Bob Dylan
is
an American historical figure of import.

Maybe not Neil Young, probably did it more to bring it up when he saw
him next.

He said he did it to stand on Neil's porch, breathe the air he breathed,
look at the view he saw each day and think about where all that music came
from.

But Elvis (and I guess the Beatles, dunno)? Somewhat,
yeah. The boyhood home of our beloved Bob houses no creativity,
artistic merit, secrets to why he's so great, or magical mystery ions
that will penetrate our soul to improve ourselves as human beings. We
should simply take his songs as an ignition to jump start clarifying
our own views on life, the universe, and everything.

I think you're going a bit over the top here. I've never heard anyone
visiting Hibbing claim any of the secret revealing, soul penetrating goals
you describe. It's not that kinda deal.

I get no
historical understanding of Bob Dylan by paying to see where he used
to eat his food or listen to the radio. In the far future
(Nature-willing), since Bob himself is the 'historical figure of
import' maybe he should be given a Lenin-like honor of being forever a
frozen public exhibit so people can just come, sit, and stare. And
pay admission. And finally understand him since the albums are just
too confusing.

If it doesn't appeal to you, don't go. But lots of others feel differently,
from visiting Lincoln's Springfield to Judy Garland's neighboring town to
Bob's. Again, your Lenin comparison is an extreme that no one is
suggesting. You seem to like high drama. I remember getting a lot of
historical understanding from visiting Paul Revere's house in Boston. Felt
no need to see his corpse, but did tour some graveyards there too. On the
other hand some of those European churches with bodies on display are kind
of cool in a ghoulish way.

I just don't like it. Seems cheap and shallow. I wonder how the man
himself feels about it.

When asked about it in the Brinkley interview he said he understood it and
had no problem with it.
