I sat through two hours and ten minutes of Oliver Stone's movie, W,
which was not easy because it's not very well written. Instead of making
scenes of recent American history come alive, it gives us the famous
quotations we've heard, and puts them in a rather fake context. Still,
it's an interesting movie on a few levels, one to show Bush's rather
fascinating personality, and to reveal how America came in invade Iraq.
Thanks for bringing this up (the movie, not the topic). Based on your
intriguing account, i went to a small little local independent
"cinema", and sat thru the same two hours and 10 minutes.
Not a great movie to be sure ("Casablanca" is a great movie), but
worth the 7.50$US. Kind of cartoonish. It took awhile for me to
recognise Richard Dreyfuss (sp?).
If Stone's intent was to portray W as evil, or a total buffoon, or in
any entirely negative light, he failed. I don't think he meant to.
Unless his level of irony is so over my head, our current bozo-in-
chief is given a reasonably sympathetic treatment, while not reaching
Flawed Tragic Hero Status.
And we're all bozos on this bus.
The (cartoonish) knives were aimed more towards Cheney & Rummy in
particular.
I didn't care for the characterisation of Condeleezza (sp?) Rice. Not
the persona so much as the vocal quality, which was kind of a nasal
whine with some upsinging. Condi doesn't sound that way.
Did anyone see the item today where the San Francisco football 49ers
of the NFL are interested in hiring her, possibly as team President?
She'll likely be out of work soon, and given her professed fondess for
pro football, it could work. The item seemed not to be a joke.
Back to W. Did i miss something? While george's struggles with alcohol
were well-documented, i missed any notation of blow. Maybe it happened
& i missed it, but i was frontrow. Reason for that omission?
Colin Powell's response to Cheney's "You could've been president":
priceless.
As usual, Oliver Stone uses a lot of good music in the movie, but most
startling of all, for me, was to hear the original With God on Our Side
play over the credits at the end of the movie. Hearing Dylan's rough
Times They Are a Changin' voice was a brilliant counterpoint to all the
modern music previously played, even if the theme was a bit too obvious,
as George Bush really seemed to believe that western style democracy was
a gift from God, a gift he could shove into a foreign country. However
the movie does show the role oil played in the planning of the invasion,
so all this justification from God was all bull*** anyway. Perhaps
Stone should have used the Fug's Kill For Peace.
I'm not a cinephile, hence can't judge Stone's relevance. I don't
think bob's WGoOS requires a hollywood movie to justify it's
relevance, then, now, or sadly, in future.
Nor can i subscribe to your contention that this "flick" answers all
the questions it seems to provide easy answers for. History is, as
they say, written by the victors; as yet to be determined.
Did i hear right? Mahmoud Ahmadinjad is ailing, physically as well as
in upcoming elections. He who denies both the Holocaust and the
existence of gays in Iran (formerly Persia). What's the unemployment
rate in Iran? High as it might be, is that good bad or indifferent?''
I heard it too. Just another case of someone who cannot rest! If I was
his doctor I would advise him to be still, very still.
And in W., who was the man descending in the "American poison ivy
cave of torture" at the beginning? Goes to show you how much I really
know about what lurks below the surface of things !
Talking about what 's lurking below the surface of things, could it be
that, unbeknownst to most, one more RobinHood is standing in the
wings? Birds you see, just birds on a wire.
Why has, in the last 2-1/2 months, the cost of petrol at the pumps
dropped 1.50$US (approx. 1/3 falloff).
and what's this got to do with me?
I do kind of resent your "spoiler" regarding the inclusion of bobSong,
but i'm an inveterate credits-watcher, and would've caught it anyway.
The other dozen or so folks in the house missed it. I was still
standing at back of theatre when the guy came in to sweep up the
popcorn.
Thought i saw a credit for an Alex Hajdu (art direction); any relation
to David?
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1175491/
Coming attractions:
Gus Van Sant's "Milk"; Sean Penn as Harvey Milk
Ron Howard's "Frost/Nixon"; Michael Sheen/Frank Langella respectively
Next film i see, remind me to buy the "regular", not the "large"
popcorn, altho' the birds will appreciate my leftOvers.
Now we've got Sarah Palin talking about how her planned oil pipeline is
God's will. God help us get through these times.
I'm betting good, if any, money that you didn't see nor hear her
appearance with "Tito the Builder" today in Virginia. Cartoonish as it
might've been, there's a part of America to whom she continues to
appeal.
I kind of like her, in no small part being as smitten as i can be by a
born-again beauty pageant runnerup, but moreso because she's outside
the "beltway" "elitist" loop; not unlike a Harry "S for Plain
Speaking" Truman, short a few intellectual smarts.
God, if any, helps those who help themSelves.
I've had a good look at the ballot for next week's election. Rather
than 2 choices, i have actually 10 on the Presidential lines. What's a
poor boy to do but to vote tactically?
Nothin' to worry yr head about anyways, the Lord, if any, will
provide.
