How would you sum up Bob's influence on popular music? Is it the
lyrics, the attitude, the song lengths, the hair...the voice?
Didn't Leonard Cohen say that once he'd heard Dylan's lyrics, he knew
it would be okay to become a songwriter? Or words to that effect?
ie, that the success of Dylan's unusual poetic style opened the door
for Cohen. I don't know about Rock, but I definitely think he changed
the substance and form of lyrics forever, which could and would go
beyond any particular genre to become part of the lexicon of modern
civilization.
I've also been listening to the quality of his voice in studio
recordings, especially the earlier recordings when people complained
about his screeching and his whininess and claimed he couldn't sing.
Not too long ago someone in rmd said that as far as they could tell,
he never hit a wrong note, and I think it's true. His voice was
different, and the difference could be irritating and uncomfortable,
and that too was groundbreaking and opened doors for more unique
offerings.
The attitude? Mix the Beatles and Dylan and I think you've got the
basic ingredients for the attitude of the music of the 60's & 70's.
After those two, flavor with your spices of choice (Stones, Janis,
Jimi, Doors, Van, Zappa, etc).
