Well, Todd Haynes has achieved something Dylan has never done.
He's made Dylan's life and art PRETENTIOUS!
Look, I like some of the footage, and the snippet of Trouble in Mind made me
wish I still had the 45. But the guy has no idea about heterosexual love
Uh...there's not much difference between heterosexual love and
homosexual love, just the gender of the partners, but anyhow, I
thought that the love/sex theme emphasized was more of the
troubledness that shows up in many of Dylans songs, but the
relationship between Claire and Robbie showed an arch of early
idealized love and eventual troubled split - which may not be the way
that most people wish their love relationships will go, straight or
gay, but it does reflect Dylans history quite well.
or
faith, among other major Dylan themes. It's like he didn't care about the
actual lyrics, just like the life of Dylan, and no connection between the life
and the art. It was like an UNFUNNY Ruttles.
The mockumentary elements in the filmed looked very intentional to me
- the "theme" of balance within the chaos was what I took to be the
strongest element. The film has some very interesting linkings
between the characters and phases as well as a mirrored framework that
kind of finds it's center(s), for me, at least, when the reveal of
Judes "true" identity occurs on the television show and when the Gere
character is finally recognized after he puts on a mask.
Bales scenes fell apart for me completely, though I liked the preacher
role better than the folky - it's the folky scenes he plays where I
agree with you that it was kind of like an unfunny Ruttles (or rather,
A Mighty Wind). Perhaps they'll continue to fall apart more on future
viewing or perhaps they'll start to make sense within the whole,
somehow.
Give me Masked & Anonymous any
day.
What the *** were these reviewers thinking?
To be fair, it wasn't total crap. Just Crap!

Bales was more like "Bob Roberts." He was too jokey. I consider it a
small nit though.
Nice comments.
