It seems fairly clear to me. Moreover, it is a central tenet of
mainstream Christianity, whether Catholic or Protestant.

Well, as a Jew, I'm still left wondering how one specifically
blasphemes against the Holy Spirit that is any different from what so
many people who have converted to any of the monotheistic belief
systems hadn't been engaged in prior to their conversion experience
and oftentimes afterwards when they reject a momemt of inspiration.
The *Ruach haKodesh* is the breath of life within us that links us to
God and that which descend on us as inspiration, so anyone who doesn't
believe in God or in divine inspiration would seem to be "blaspheming
against the Holy Spirit". Also, I can imagine a number of non-
believers (of any of the 3 monotheistic traditions) who wholly accept
divine inspiration without using the same language and the
monotheistic traditions and many a person who believes in the one God
who misuses this inspiration and therefore blasphemes against it. It
would seem that further definition of the nature of this blaspheming
is required or we've got most people unforgiven.
That sounds much worse than to me the so called unforgiving God of the
"old testament".
