Sorry boys, but mp3s sound absolutely and purely beautiful to a fellow
who at one time listened to music played on a Seabreeze turntable with a
2 pound tonearm.
The only good thing about vinyl that I can recall, is the size of the
album art and watching the label spin round and round and round next to
that pretty little gimbal mechanism. I imagine a fellow might get a bit
tired of handling a record collection while wearing white cotton gloves.
I too don't miss vinyl. True, those old album covers looked good, but
those discs made out of that oil product were always a problem. And I
guess in some ways they sound better than cds, but in other ways they
don't. I think a really well mastered cd played on a decent player can
match decent vinyl played on a decent turntable. And cds don't
deteriorate from being played.
The cd revolution made music so much more accessible, that I think it's
silly to hang onto vinyl. True, it's great for young people to be able
to find vinyl gems cheap at garage sales, but this paying $40 for a two
disc vinyl version of a current cd release is just silly. I've seen
Modern Times in vinyl and a disc with just two songs on it makes no
sense to me.
The mp3 revolution is making music even more accessible than cds, so I
guess I should be in favour of it, and I am, for people whose needs it
serves. But just let us not forget that we lose sound quality when we
shrink music files.
My friend, the quality suffers the moment it's not live; processed music
will always be of inferior quality.
If that guy had bought himself a $12000 guitar and started singing crazy
love-songs to his precious one; if he'd taken the time to learn how to
play it 'stead of learning how to buy fancy stereo equipment and such
like, why I think he would have had a good shot at real happiness.
My old friend Pyx Findlekind used to say:
"...better to be at the bottom of excellence than the top of
mediocrity."
Organic music, biodegradable; you just can't beat it!
