I still think it is a muddled song. What is he protesting about?
Guns? Progress? Men being more stupid than a poor woman on a block?
It feels like a protest song in search of its target.
Well, that makes it sound like a superior protest song, one without an
obvious target. You have to work out if YOU'RE part of the target.
I think it's a kind of precursor to Disease of Conceit, another
underrated bit of restrained snarling, sung by a pessimistic narrator.
Man THINKS ... cos he rules the earth, he can do as he pleases... Man
doesn't rule the earth. He thinks (or maybe feels..?) he does. And he
thinks there's no moral authority "above" him. He thinks everything is
the way it seems, that the world he sees is really real.
I remain puzzled by the moon line. Is it a Bible or Koran reference?
Hmm, I still think the targets here are too diffuse to really
convince. Lines like "Man is opposed to fair-play" sound perilously
close to trite to my ears and the vague unease about progress sounds
like a middle-aged rocker saying "Stop the world, I want to get off."
I don't blame him for feeling like that at that stage of his life.
Funny trip from looking up at 'That big fat moon' shining like a spoon
to being scared when people touch it.
The moon and the woman on the block seem somehow linked to me. Dunno
why. Observers?
