The echoes in the MT songs are fascinating to me, especially those
referring back to pre-rock popular songs, which are less expected than
the blues and R&R influences (e.g., "Someday Baby" -- "Hip Shake" or
"Trouble No More"; "Thunder on the Mountain" -- "Johnny B. Goode").
It's obvious that Bob's been listening to a lot of Bing Crosby (as do
I). I hadn't thought of it until I saw the message that Delia
forwarded, but "Beyond the Horizon" certainly reminds me of "Red Sails
in the Sunset" -- a song that Bing recorded with the Dorsey Brothers in
1935.
And "When the Deal Goes Down" is certainly a strong nod to Crosby's
theme song, "Where the Blue of the Night (Meets the Gold of the Day),"
which Bing originally recorded in 1931 (and sang at the beginning of his
radio show every week). You can practically whistle Bing's tune on top
of Bob's, although there are definitely variations.
This isn't to suggest anything like plagiarism -- Bob has simply taken
his influences and turned them into something new, like most great
songwriters do.
