Well it would be hard to find a singer-songwriter who rates CostelloThat's an interesting supposition.
above Van Morrison. Van is one of the greats and Costello is
comparatively a minor artist.
Van has had a few huge hits, like Gloria and Brown Eyed Girl, and he had a few highly acclaimed albums in the 60s. What's he done for us lately?
Costello never had huge hits, I guess, and his best albums may not have outsold Van's, but he had an amazing run of albums in his first nine years, each one showing growth from the previous, with only one misstep, Goodbye Cruel World.
In the following 15 years, from Spike to The Delivery Man, he made all kinds of musical experiments and collaborations as well as delivering a bunch of very good songs. His current album with Toussaint shows he's still on top of his game.
I suspect that Elvis Costello would win in a contest with Van Morrison for Current Prince of Singer-Songwriters.
