Topic of the Day: Education

Written in longhand across Mr. Rolfzen's chalkboard to greet us as we
walked into Room 204 up at Hibbing High School this past weekend for
our remedial poetry lesson:

"You can smell the pine wood burnin'
You can hear the school bell ring
Gotta get up near the teacher if you can
If you wanna learn anything."

What say you, RMD: We gonna allow our education system to be gutted
from the inside or bulldozed over from the out?

We going to allow our communities to get embroiled in discussion about
which books to ban or programs to cut rather than how to fund, add and
build?

We going to permit the takeover of the Internet by service providers so
as to limit our access to information?

Is this phenomena called "newsgroups" a true revival of the "art of
lettres" or are we just fooling ourselves and pumping electricty
through the corpse of public literacy and watching it jump around on
the morgue slab, a last indulgence before the age of video-mail (and
McLuhan's age of post-literacy) takes full root?

Gotta' run to the airport; I'll check your answers later!
