True, some people would think Self-Portrait was bad just because Bob
does some old pop and country songs on it. That was somehow percieved as
being "establishment music" and Bob was supposed to be
anti-establishment. Or so they thought.
In that way is was every bit as radical as some of his more celebrated
releases. Belle Isle is particularly wretched. I can imagine him
chuckling about that one long and hard.
I always thought that Belle Isle was kind of a parody of As I Went Out
One Morning... same chick, better mood.

Pussywillow Wine
Sweet smell in the air tonight
As I pass by an old church
Brings a funny strange memory
When she called my rhymes a crutch.
Spanish moss dangling from a tree
Reminds me of her hair
That was long ago and so far away
Her ghost follows me ev'rywhere.
The moon cuts through the sky tonight,
turned up on it's side.
I saw one shooting blaze of flame
As the mill burned down and the past died.
Smoke rolled across near her house,
out in the Shadowville.
Billows and haze not shy of the moon,
disapeared down behind a hill.
Everything I ever wished for,
I've had it from time to time.
I've plunged deep and sometimes gone dry,
Memories of pussywillow wine.
Here's a toast that stubfingered witty rouge,
And the night she confessed that I was better.
It is still her that I adore,
There's no address to send this letter.
Not by water but by fire it seems
As Jesus himself draws near
Signs and wonders of this lifetime
I watch history dissapear.
A few days ago the moon was fuller,
shot a beam of moonlight across my room.
I sat on the porch thinking of her sad pale face
Basking in a brilliant gloom.
Fire up a bowl and the dream dances
On the edge I wait my turn
She spins like a little Russian whirlwind
I treasure her wet burn.
Everything I ever wished for,
I've had it from time to time.
I've plunged deep and sometimes gone dry,
Memories of pussywillow wine.
