"It was experimental, all kinds of different licks," said Silva, who
watched the sessions. "They would get into one thing and they would go
over it and over it, then they would change gears."

this statement alone certainly doesn't rule out old songs; "Wicked
Messenger," for example has been experimental, with all kinds of
different licks over the past few years.
i do hope, however, that the new record features new songs (and i'll
assume that's the case until the inevitable Edna Gundersen article says
otherwise....)
