As I read the "who likes Dylan now" thread, I was tending to side with
you in the discussion you were having with Mr Jinx because I don't
believe anyone has to rave about anything if they don't want to. But
now I see that he is at least partly right. You don't seem to care for
a massive part of his artistic output: his live work.
I don't care for a massive part of his current live work, absolutely,
and I don't see how I could be expected to.
If you want to
think of Dylan as a writer first and a performer second, that's up to
you.
I know it's an unusual stance.
I think he's a performer first.
I think you mistake "new" with "original". Originality is the ability
to make things new, not the ability to make new things.
Actually originality is the ability to make truly new things. "The
ability to make things new" is rejuvenation, the ultimate success if
you're going to spend your time reheating your history or someone
else's.
I didn't mean to imply you were neurotic. I used "fetishised" as a
provocative overstatement. I know this can cause offense on the net,
and apologise if that was the case.
I don't care about any don't look back schtick. I enjoy what Dylan does
with his voice when he performs. New lyrics, old lyrics, the
performance is always the key thing. "Don't look back" is a romantic
catchphrase, idiotic if taken literally.
What I find insulting about your response is that you accuse me of
falsifying my opinions, distorting my perception, going to "lengths" in
order to keep the faith up. Why, if someone disagrees with you, must
you question their sincerity?
I'm not "questioning your sincerity" because you disagree with me, I'm
questioning the motive behind it because of the way you express it
yourself. I believe you're sincere, but I also believe you're
straining.
How is wanting to see new work from an artist that has always claimed
to be wanting always to doing new things, as I hear so often repeated
here, to defend him and otherwise, i.e. "the don't look back schtick",
having a fetish? And splitting hairs between "new" and "original" is
more of the same. It sounds like you're making excuses for him. The
fact that you so easily got offended when the point was made just
reinforces this perception.
