Let me put it this way:
I know people from all walks of life. Some are Atheists, some are
Christians, some are Jews, some are various kinds of pagan and shaman
types, some are Agnostics, some are Buddhists or Yogis, some are New
Agers. Within each of those 'types', some of them are quite fascist -
in the sense that they believe that other people should think and
believe or not believe, like them should change and be just like them
and those who don't are either stupid, evil, or brainwashed, etc.
Others have their beliefs or lack of beliefs and have found some way to
allow others to hold very different beliefs and respect that, as long
as everyone agrees to respect each other and not insist that others are
bad because they don't share their beliefs. A few have managed to see
the similarities between ways of experiencing what we do in life and
what we make, and how different people with very different beliefs or
lack thereof seem to pull very similar symbols and understandings out
of a variety of sources, whether it's a religion, a spiritual path, a
piece of literature or a cultural pattern, and that humanity seems to
have a common pool of psychological or spiritual resources that we all
appear to be pulling from and that our endless bickering and fighting
is pretty silly, or dangerous, depending on how far it's taken.
