Well I signed up,... and lets just say, its a mixed bag.
What you get:
After signing up, I took the monthly option, you get an email detailing
your member number and password. This is the number and password you
use on this page http://drdemento.com/playnow.html to get access to the
higher bit rate streams (where available).
Then you get an individual email for each show you can listen to, the
same email you get if you purchase a show.
The Forum is public at http://drdemento.com/phpBB2/ with DOC members
only sections, however, there doesn't seem to be process in place yet
for upgrading forums accounts to DOC status. You sign up, and have to
wait for the admin to activate your account. Activation gets you
general access to the forums, but not DOC area access, after sending an
email asking how to get upgraded so far the only answer I have gotten
so far is 'huh?'.
Not that it is such a big deal, I was the 10th person to create a forum
account (presumably including admin) and there are only 11 now.
I've not yet seen anyone else in the chat room.
The Shows. Well I hadn't purchased any shows from the site before, so I
wasn't fully aware of the restrictions on the streams.
Let me just say, the 'one listen only' rule is really harsh for new
listeners.
The first attempt ,using one of the free shows, firefox asked what I
wanted to do with the m3u, so I saved it to the hard drive then tried
to run it from the hard drive, Winamp gave a 404 file not found. Well
one down.
I wrote back to the site and they reset that show, so I tried again,
this time after saving the m3u to the drive, trying to run the link
inside firefox. again getting a 404 file not found.
For the 3rd attempt I decided to switch to Internet Explorer to see if
that was the issue, I purchased 0216, and selected the high quality
stream and it worked! IE didn't ask me what to do with the m3u just
sent it straight to Winamp, which I guessed was the difference.
So I purchased 0601 Uncensored for my next go, this time using firefox
again, sent the m3u to winamp and away it went! Yay! Unfortunately
after 11 minutes winamp disappeared, I don't know what happened, it
just went 'poof', *sigh*.
I ordered 0601 again, this time it played fully through successfully.
Yay!
I will say, to me, the higher bit rate shows sound fantastic, probably
the best I have ever heard the Doctor actually. And of course having
an Uncensored option is a great idea, I haven't heard Epithets censored
but it must be quite altered!
As it's very early days I won't be making a decision about keeping the
subscription going for a few months at least, see how it grows..
