Toby Keith Recognized by the CRB, Inc. as Artist Humanitarian of the Year
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (March 1, 2007) - Each year, Country Radio Broadcasters,
Inc. recognizes one of the many deserving country artists with it's Artist
Humanitarian Award. This year during the opening ceremonies of the 38th
Annual Country Radio Seminar, CRB recognized Toby Keith.
Last year's honoree was Neal McCoy, who announced Toby Keith as the
recipient of 2007 CRB Humanitarian Award. CRB President R. J Curtis
presented the actual award to Keith, following Keith's performance at the
Country Radio Seminar's Music City Jam.
The Toby Keith Foundation was formed in January 2006 to facilitate his
efforts on behalf of a number of organizations in Oklahoma. Those include
Ally's House, where children with cancer can get help with medical bills,
short term housing, travel clothing, groceries and other needs. It is
estimated that Toby Keith donates more than a half a million dollars a year
to this cause alone. Keith also helped Red Oak Elementary School in Moore
Oklahoma to build a new gymnasium after a 1999 tornado ravaged that town,
and also made donations to the Moore community and the Beth Haven
Independent Church in Moore. His participation in Country In The Rockies
benefited the Frances Williams Preston Laboratories for Cancer Research, a
division of the T. J. Martell Foundation. He has also been a major
contributor to the Make A Wish Foundation, St. Jude and THE Salvation Army
among many others charities. In June of 2006, Toby Keith completed his
fourth USO Tour. The rest of the year, he meets military families at shows
and visits soldiers in hospitals.
The Country Radio Broadcasters leads the industry in recognizing the
humanitarian achievements of Country artists. In 1990, CRB instituted an
Artist Humanitarian Award, which was first presented during the 21st Country
Radio Seminar. Past honoree's have included Diamond Rio, Brad Paisley,
Lonestar, Brooks & Dunn, Collin Raye, Clint Black, Reba McEntire, Kenny
Rogers, Joe Diffie, Billy Ray Cyrus, Vince Gill, Garth Brooks, Charlie
Daniels, Willie Nelson, Roseanne Cash and Alabama.
CRS - 38 will be held February 28 through March 2, 2007 at the Nashville
Convention Center. Complete Seminar Information may be obtained by

CRB Releases Attendance Figures for CRS 38
New Agenda Committee Chair Named
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (March 5, 2007) - Attendance figures have been released for
the 38th annual Country Radio Seminar ( CRS - 38) which ended Friday, March
2, 2007.
This years total attendance figure was 2865, including 2080 full registrants
(including exhibitors, panelists and sponsors ) and 785 participant
registrants. Participant registrants attend part of the event but do not
register for the full seminar. Those related events include the Thursday
afternoon Town Meeting and the Friday Radio Sales Day.
This represents a 7% increase over last year when the combined total was
2679.
Radio Consultant and CRB Board Member Rusty Walker commented about this
years Country Radio Seminar "What impressed me this year was the large
number of first time attendees and the solid representation by small and
medium market stations. It seems that many of these stations view the
Seminar as a great opportunity for continuing education and networking".
Country Radio Broadcasters incoming President Becky Brenner further noted
"There was a real positive feeling about the event this year with many
registrants feeling that their was a great balance between education and
entertainment. We are very upbeat going into the early planning stages of
CRS-39".
Joining Brenner as officers this year are Bill Mayne (903 Music) Vice
President, Carole Bowen (WKIS) Secretary and Jeff Walker (AristoMedia/Marco
Promotions) Treasurer.
Newly elected Board Members were Joel Burke (KYGO), Renee Fonner (KFKF),
Mike Peterson (WUSN) and John Zarling (Big Machine Records).
Bob Richards (WFMS Indianapolis) was named Agenda Chair for the upcoming
year and Keith Kaufman (WSIX Nashville) was named Agenda Vice-Chair.
CRS-39 will be March 5-7, 2008 at the Nashville Convention Center.
Further information on CRS-38 can be obtained by visiting www.crb.org.
Education and Music Key Highlights of CRS-38
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (March 5, 2007) - Combine two major research presentations,
one keynote address featuring Jon Bon Jovi, over twenty educational panels,
three performance driven luncheons, one Jam featuring superstar Toby Keith
(with surprise guests Bobby Bare and Crystal Gayle, among others), five New
Faces and many varied sponsored and late night events and you have CRS-38.
Over 2800 radio and music executives attended the Country industry's premier
convention February 28 - March 2 at the Nashville Convention Center.
Opportunities for Country music growth were highlighted in the two research
projects presented at CRS-38 by Edison Music Research. The Hispanic study
identified opportunities for Country radio and labels in that rapidly
growing demographic. An in-depth study of Country radio's core listeners
(P1 Research) yielded a positive outlook for the Country radio format and
confirmed the Internet as an increasingly popular source of new music
discovery. The latter project was co-sponsored by the CRB (Country Radio
Broadcasters) and CMA (Country Music Association).
The educational content of CRS-38 was lauded by many for its relevance and
diversity. Popular panels included: No Holds Barred (sponsored by BMI),
Ronnie Milsap Life of A Legend, Embracing New Technologies, Anatomy of a
Record Label, Artist Interviews 101 (sponsored by Dakota Sky Records),
Theories of Music Scheduling and Don't Get Tangled in the Web. The Bullseye
Marketing sponsored Extreme Networking round table concept proved to also be
very popular.
The keynote, sponsored by Bob Kingsley's Country Top 40, a conversation
between Jon Bon Jovi and Gerry House was well received and covered a broad
range of topics from songwriting to his decision to avoid political
statements as an entertainer.
Talent was abundant with luncheon performances by Lee Brice and Steve Holy
(sponsored by Curb), Chris Young and Terri Clark (sponsored by SonyBMG) and
Luke Bryan and Trace Adkins (sponsored by Capitol Nashville).
The ASCAP sponsored KCRS Live showcased John Anderson, John Rich, Rivers
Rutherford and Gretchen Wilson. It was Gretchen's first time to perform in
the "writers in the round" setting.
The BMI and Country Aircheck co-sponsored WCRS Live featured Sarah Buxton,
Pat Green, Jeffrey Steele and legend Mac Davis.
This acoustic setting allows the radio participants to see the music from
the songwriter's point of view - a perspective they generally never get.
Superstar Toby Keith packed the performance hall at the ACM/United Stations
sponsored Music City Jam. Guests for the show included Montgomery Gentry,
Flynville Train, Carter's Chord, Lindsey Haun, a very humorous Bobby Bare
and Crystal Gayle, who dueted with Toby on her classic 'Just You and I '
among other songs.
The New Faces show, sponsored by R&R and the CMA, was its usual mixture of
fun, frivolity and great performances by Eric Church, Trent Tomlinson, Jack
Ingram, Miranda Lambert and Rodney Atkins. ABC Radio Networks' American
Country Countdown host Kix Brooks emceed the program after Charlie Monk's
"Let us Pray" monologue.
In summing up the success of CRS-38, CRB Executive Director Ed Salamon
stated "From all accounts, this was one of our most successful events. To
actually grow attendance to this event by 7% and increase sponsorships, is a
measurable indication of the growing support of both country radio and the
music community for the Country Radio Seminar. We already have some great
plans in development for CRS-39."

Country Radio Broadcasters' Hispanic Study presented by Edison Media
Research Well Received at Country Radio Seminar (CRS-38)
Report Includes Recommendations for Radio and Music Row
(Nashville, Tennessee - March 5, 2007) Hispanic radio listeners are
favorable towards and open to listening to Country music, according to a new
survey conducted by Edison Media Research on behalf of the Country Radio
Broadcasters.
Full results of the Edison/CRB study "The Hispanic-American Relationship to
Country Radio and Music," were unveiled at the 38th annual Country Radio
Seminar. The study of 600 Hispanics nationwide, age 12-49, and their
relationship with Country music was commissioned by CRB to examine the
growth potential of the format among America's most rapidly expanding
demographic group.
At the conclusion of his presentation on Hispanics and Country Music, Edison's
president Larry Rosin stated, "There is no reason to ignore this audience -
Country music and country radio simply must attract the Hispanic community
in order to be viable in the long term." His conclusions also noted that
Country music and Country radio have not yet tried to appeal to this
audience.
The report included several recommendations for Country radio and Music Row.
For Country radio: The key word is Outreach - Build Bridges. Advertise
within Hispanic communities, hire outside consultants who specialize in
reaching these consumers. Attend Hispanic community events, obtain
endorsements from Hispanic taste-makers, consider creating Spanish language
simulcasts streamed from websites and adopt a long-range plan to create
loyal listeners in the Hispanic community.
For Music Row: Consider re-recording songs in Spanish, create collaborations
between country stars and Spanish stars, release Salsa or Bachata remixes of
Country hits, and try to increase credibility and interest among hispanic
listeners as part of a long-term strategy to be integral to Hispanic
consumers.
Some key points of study include:
Twenty-four percent of Hispanics age 12-49 say that they enjoy listening to
Country music , and another 42% say they "do not listen to Country music but
they would be open to listening more." Only one-third of Hispanics say they
dislike Country music and would never listen-a number consistent with what
is reported by non-hispanic whites.
In addition, only 38% of Hispanics are aware of a Country radio station in
their area. Potential listening is hampered by this lack of awareness and
outreach.
One of the most significant finding points to tremendous untapped potential
for growth of Country radio's Hispanic listener base: Out of all surveyed
participants 41% agree that "Country radio stations are not interested in
appealing to Hispanic listeners." The results indicate that Country radio
would benefit greatly from increased outreach to Hispanics: 56% of those who
say they like or are open to Country music say that seeing an ad on Spanish
television would lead them to listen more.
Rosin concludes, "You reap what you sow. Country music only needs to make
itself available to Hispanics, and then court them. Listening will almost
assuredly go up."
CRB's President Becky Brenner of KMPS in Seattle adds, " The Country Radio
Broadcasters are very proud to have been the catalyst for this research.
The results are certainly very exciting for both country radio in particular
and the country music format in general."
The full presentation can be viewed at www.crb.org in the research section.
