Bits from the website; have the CD coming to the library and I'll hear
it when it gets here (one of the perks of collections management...
though I do try to buy things of general interest).
I'll admit right up front I have sour grapes.
yeah, we all do; so?
Anyway, Jay has talent. He can put together a complex coherent score
quickly, working mostly in his head.
He's writing in a pretty traditional style, but it doesn't really sound
like anyone else to me. That's pretty freaking impressive. He's got
more facility than I do, for sure.
So what's the point? He's doing great for a 14-year-old. But exclusive
contracts, recordings, and heavy promotion? If he were 21 years old, he
would be struggling along with every other 21 year old talent and I
don't think he would particularly stand out.
Hard to say. He's got something. It's not quite formed yet; the
comparison to Mozart (who didn't really start cooking until his mid-20s)
is apt. Like that harp thing in what I assume is the slow movement of
the symphony that's playing on his website. That first bass note is
magical...but then he does the arpeggio and spoils it.
The trouble with starting with your 5th Symphony is that it makes it
hard to disavow the first 4.
