Hi Chris - it's been a long time!
I like Matt's solution of artificial harmonics in strings - say violins. If
you have a place where you can put a little note, or "thunk" in the middle
of that crescendo - maybe a pp pizz in the violas - you can somewhat mask
the entrance of the piccolo and complete the crescendo. And you can change
the texture of a 16 second cresc in the middle of it, which is always a cool
orchestral effect.
