You know, I want to add to this:

I find this true when I'm recording. I get the student in there to record an
audition piece. The teacher is there. We start take 1 and they stop them a
couple of notes in. Man I hate that. I'm more of the "let's make 1 complete
take, just so we have a complete one, in case we run out of time, and then
go back and see if we can improve". I find the students are far more at ease
because they can get into the vibe of the piece, get through all the
sections and moods, and it's much easier for them to relax when we make a
"real" take. The times when I do this, and they don't completely flub the
first take, we find that we're generally choosing between that first take
and another, but the first take is very often one of the top two they make
(because they didn't think they were doing it "for real" they're much more
relaxed). It's like the turn the recording on when they don't know it, and
you'll get a much better feel as they're not so worried about "playing it
right".

I think this goes right in line with the Philosophy Mike's talking about,
and Mike, maybe you should try some recording and practice not worrying
about perfection. Recording one's self is an interesting way to see your
playing from a different perspective.

Best,
Steve
