On what basis do you believe that?

I have to admit, I'm a bit intrigued now. My public library has some
Boulez and Varese recordings and I'll check a few out (in both senses)
in the near future.

The BBC ran a short series about modern British classical music
(basically from Britten onwards) recently. I was disappointed that
they only mentioned Vaughan Williams briefly at the beginning, since I
like his work. My favourite bit was Oliver Knussen's opera of _Where
the Wild Things Are_.

Under what definition of "modern" is RVW "modern"? He's two
generations older -- basically the same age as Elgar and Holst -- than
Britten (but was happily long-lived). Did they include my current
interests, Herbert Howells (1892-1983) and Gerald Finzi (1901-1956),
both rather older than Britten (1913-1976), and in some ways more
adventurous?
