I don't suppose that would have stopped them; surely there were
recordings of the 1812 Overture, William Tell, Haydn's "Surprise" etc.
Remember the LP of War Requiem? Mr. Culshaw included a note warning
that if you played the opening loudly enough to be heard, you might
blow out your speakers a few minutes later. In the initial CD release
the dynamic range was compressed to avoid that problem, but in the
reissue (the one with the rehearsal footage, and presumably what's
included in the third black box of collected BB) it was fixed.
I had a similar, memorable, experience the first time I listened to
Ravel's Daphnis on CD. Huge dynamic range.
