How Do You Feel About "Indoor" CM Played Outdoors?

That is, with amplification because there isn't an enclosed acoustic
available.
I've been to a number of outside venues - Blossom, Tanglewood, Robin
Hood Dell etc. Blossom and Tangelwood are OK if you sit in the shed as
there is an acoustic of sorts. If you sit close enough you don't even
hear the amplification.
Last night I attended an all-Beethoven concert at the Verizon
Ampitheater in OC, CA. Pacific Symphony played the 7th and the
Emperor. The sound was entirely amplified, and it sucked. No
distortion to speak of, but weak in the bass while adding a metallic
sheen to the music. This venue is no Verona.
I'm not one who finds it enjoyable to listen to music written for a
hall being played in the open air. There are just too many
compromises, including all of the noise from the picnicing crowd. The
sound is artificial. Music sounds more realistic coming off a home
stereo.
I'm all for outdoor music being played outdoors. You know, marches
etc.
