Stanislav Bunin Kreisleriana

Steve Emerson mentioned this Kreisleriana two months ago as a
"knockout".

It has finally arrived from somewhere in the US on JVC Melodiya.

Not sure I agree about the knockout description of this recording
(Bunin can certainly play very fast and even coherently fast; perhaps
that's what SE means?), but one thing is sure: the recording, itself,
as it sounds today on JVC/Melodiya VCD-1164, pub date 1987, three
years after the recording date of 1984, is anything but state of the
art. The piano is clearly out of tune(shades of AB), and not just in
one place. Moreover, the piano tone in ff is quite unpleasant and
distorted, even blowsy. In anything less than ff the sound seems fine,
however, if not among the finest products of the Soviet system.

It would surprise me if JVC had acquired anything but a faithful copy
of the mastertape in this instance, but I could be wrong.

I think Steve owns the LP rather than the CD, but I am not sure. I
would be interested in his impressions of the recording qua recording,
rather than qua performance.
