Don't trust
reviewers. Only trust your own ears and even then try more than once.
This is so true.
Last week, I listened once again to Böhm's VPO B9 (Jones, Troyanos,
Thomas, Riddersbusch), which has been my go-to version for years. This
time around, the first three movements didn't catch fire with me. In
fact, they seemed a bit "meh." Only the finale was exceptional, and
then, chiefly due to the soloists and chorus.
Quite a shock to have one's expectations shattered, especially by an
old friend. I wonder how much of that can be attributed to hearing so
many other/newer B9s since the last time I pulled the Böhm off the
shelf. Even a version that I didn't warm to (like Chailly's) can serve
to change one's perceptions of what was considered tried and true.
So true, Mark.
