Re: Yves Nat Schumann

TD: Dim?

EK: Yep.

TD: Well, most of Nat's recordings WERE dim, recorded for the most
part in
the early 1950s in monaural sound.

EK: To view a recording as 'dim' merely because it is a vintage
recording seems to me..well, just a bit dim.
We're discusing the 78 rpm discs in the Schumann set, not the LP era
items. I've got just a few of the Nat Schumann 78's in question, and
even with less than stellar 78 rpm reproduction I would have to say
that the original material has been somewhat agressively filtered in
these EMI transfers, which are not nearly up to the quality level of
the best transfers of period material done in the 1970's or 1980's.
let alone some of the more sensitive computer-assisted processing of
the present day.

TD: I would certainly not want to hear them tarted up with fake
stereo, ambience, or boosted highs in the
manner of some amateur jobs often touted here.

EK: There was no mention of that kind of procedure in this discussion
prior to your post.
As far as the "amatuer" jobs posted here, there have admittedly been
many that are sonically grating and untrue to the original sound of
vintage recordings. However, there have been quite a few - and here I
think of many of the postings by Mr. Anderson and some of the other
more talented 'amatuer' transfer people - which have been true to the
original source material but have clarified the sound images in an
honest and representative manner. Let's put it this way - the great
A.C.Griffith of EMI evidently had nothing to do with the Schumann
transfers under discussion.

TD: I'll accept dim IF the performance is worth the trouble in the
first place.

EK: Thankfully, one does not have to suffer that fate, given the
variety of source materials and processing programs extant.
