It was the Irish comedian Frank Carson. Actually, he said
that "an intellectual" is anyone who can listed to the

(His exact words, if I remember correctly).

I suppose that this applies to the USA "intellectuals" only.

He was addressing a British audience at the time, but I suppose
his jibe is valid regardless of nationality.

(BTW, what is "The Lone Ranger"?)

It was a 1950s TV series made in the USA. The Lone Ranger and his
sidekick, Tonto, galloped around the Wild West righting wrongs and
shooting bad guys. He always wore a white outfit and a black mask
over his eyes, for reasons known only to the producers -- perhaps
to prevent him re-negotiating his contract.

So is it right to conclude that anyone who never has seen The Lone
Ranger (or does not know what it is) is an "intellectual" by (his)
definition?

That depends how seriously you take Frank Carson, who is, after all,
[allegedly] a comedian. As most of us are familiar with the William
Tell Ovt, regardless of The Lone Ranger, I think the answer to your
question will be "no".

Hm. I'm not known at all with Irish 'comedians'.
Do Irish 'comedians' have nothing serious to tell?

Being familiar with the William Tell overture cannot be a criterion, I think.
"Everyone" seems to be, thanks to The Lone Ranger.
