Hi Chris & Damian -
Thanks for the reference. I was looking at that review just a few
minutes ago. Excellent review, and 'Cardus on Music' is one of my
favorite books on music criticism
Also, later on in the book he (Cardus) refers to that important
concert again, almost forty years after the event:
"...Harty gave one of the first, if not the first, interpretations in
this country of Mahler's Ninth Symphony after only two rehearsals. And
a superb interpretation it was, wonderfully nuanced, with the Halle
strings unequalled anywhere in this country" (p 298).
I have heard a variation of this Guardian story years ago, although I
can't remember to what particular concert or work it was in reference.
It is a great 'comeback' on Cardus' part. And an interesting aside,
Cardus and Harty were (or became) fast friends, although they
apparently disagreed on several musical issues.
