But you ignore the fact that all postings that have replies are part of a
thread. Therefore, when one reads a thread, it is superfluous to repeat the
same text over and over and over and over and over....
Ideally, in a threaded conversation, it would not be necessary to repeat
*anything* from the previous posting, unless one wants to reply to
individual statements on a point-by-point basis. In such a case, judicious
editing and interpolation can result in a highly readable reply.
Many of the bottom-posted replies (especially in this newsgroup) consist of
a long sequence of previous replies, that have already been read in the same
thread and do not have to be repeated. The most annoying are those that
repeat several hundred lines of the previous several dozen postings and end
with the poster's comment, "I agree."
