More is not always better. A photographer frames a picture for
best effect. In the case of VistaVision, the negative includes wide

those margins in projection is simply to destroy the movie.
I think one can intuit whether a given cropping "makes sense", as human
judgement about what makes a "good" composition likely does not vary.
Perhaps I'll watch "The Searchers" again this weekend, and try to decide
if the (approximately) 16:9 of the Blu-ray makes aesthetic sense.
Not to beat a dead horse, but what's in question is not the aspect
ratio.  It's how much of the margins have been left it.  If you could
mask the top and bottom and sides of your tv while retaining the
present aspect ratio, you would have a basis for comparison --
or you could acquire the previous DVD edition.

This is confusing. I always assumed the masking was at the top and bottom --
never at the sides. Why would you use less than the full frame width?

Masking should always be at the sides, not at the top and bottom. Or
maybe top and bottom in addition to side masking, in order to finetune
and accomodate unusual aspect ratios.
Since the format with the largest area and the largest aperture (and
therefore also the most light coming through which can fill the
biggest screen area) is Cinemascope (or related scope formats), it
makes most sense to mask for 1.85 or 1.66 by moving the side masking
in and retaining the full height of the image.

Far too many movie theaters have a big 1.85 image and a small scope
image which they mask by bringing only the top masking down. This is a
basically wrong and ineffective setup. But again, since most movie
theaters in the US are cheap and crappy setups, that is probably what
you have seen most often.
I am not surprised - from your earlier comments it is obvious that you
have never seen really good film presentations. Funny, I had to think
of you yesterday when I was at Harvard Film Archive doing a service
call on their studio-grade 35mm projectors. From your comments about
film and DVD, it is obvious that you have never seen anything like
that in real life. Pity.
That's why I asked if you ere in the Rochester area. Because we have
some of those studio machines sitting there at the Eastman House and
we are putting in some more later his year. But I think the guy in
Rochester was Kip Williams.
