There really *is* a problem with the terminology. Clearly the word
"pirate" outside of the current context implies illegality, though *in*
the current context many use "pirate" to refer to those who merely
publish material that's in the public domain.
And technically the word "pirate" is best applied to those who make copies of released-and-available material and resell it themselves for profit. Obviously the industry wants to use a term with a connotation of something malicious and self-serving ... conditions that they know quite well indeed.
You have to look at it from the point of view of the companies. If someone else finds a quarter on the street, and they were thinking of maybe walking down that street themselves some time, then that person stole that quarter from them! A law must be passed that nobody should be able to pick up money they see on the street, except for record executives! Our very way of life is endangered by coin piracy!
