I just received a CD of Maderna conducting Mahler's 9th symphony (BBC). I
started playing it about 20 minutes ago and so far I like it very much -- though I'm not yet sure what volume to play it at. My question is whether my
copy of this CD is defective. I don't think it is, but I want to make sure.
There is a sound at the beginning of every track that I noticed while I was
standing next to my CD player experimenting with different volumes. I'm not
sure I could even hear it if I were listening from a normal distance. If
that is how the CD sounds, so be it; I'm sure I will enjoy listening to it
many times. But if my copy of the CD is defective, I would like to get a
replacement. What I hear sounds something like the sound of waves on the
seashore, except it is at a constant volume. I'm not sure if "hiss" is the
right word, it is gentler than what I would normally call a hiss. But I'm
guessing the noise does come from the recording or the remastering; it
doesn't sound like something that was happening while the orchestra was
playing.

If you have this CD, do you hear that noise at the beginning of each track?

If you experience this problem, you need a CD demagnetizer, like this
one offered on ebay:

You also have to make sure the long edge of the CD players is
orientated towards the magnetic North Pole. That is very important
because if not, it can cause differential intermodular interference
which will degrade the sound quality.

Hope this helps!

Hmm. If the long edge of the CD player were indeed to be 'orientated', then it would be impossible for it to be pointing towards the magnetic North Pole. It would instead, depending on the OP's location, be pointing somewhere like Greenwich, Jerusalem, or Mecca.

OTOH, if he wished to *orient* the specified edge in the specified direction, it might look a bit odd (depending on the configuration of the rest of his equipment), but it would certainly be possible--though I am uncertain as to any proposed differential intermodular interference effects.
