That's a laugh.
Unlike the real thiefs around here, Philips paid, and paid dearly, for
each and every track of that blessed Hofmann set. ARGH!!!
Very dull listening. He wasn't even drunk when he made those
recordings.

You should have given credit to your good friends, naughty! It's no
wonder you got your ass kicked out of a specialized piano group. I am
not talking only about your lack of knowledge, but about sticking it
to your friends. Yes, people have had much patience with you, but not
infinite patience...

The unending (and always superficial) Hofmann-bashing is a
misdirected proxy attack on the Pianophiles group. Like or dislike
of Hofmann's playing is a matter of taste, but trivializing his import
and achievements is nothing short of ridiculous. Rachmaninoff thought
him to be the greatest pianist he knew. Enough said.
Hofmann succumbed to alcoholism rather late in life once he lost his
Curtis appointment. Later-onset alcoholism, particularly among
formerly hard-working highly-motivated individuals is unfortunately
not that uncommon. His disease had more bearing on his
accomplishments pre-1938 than the onset of Parkinsons, arthritis, or
blindness post-1938 would have had. Anyone who has done any reading
or has any personal experience involving alcoholism or addiction
realizes that it is a disease every bit as random, tragic, and
debilitating as any of the diseases listed above. Many substance
addictions have a lower long-term recovery rate than most forms of
cancer, and they can be just as deadly. The disease of addiction is
not one of choice or moral failure. That's not opinion, that's
science.
