There are, of course, different interpretations of that supposed
saying.
One is that the word used for "camel" denotes an entry gate into
Jerusalem that had a low portico. This gate was supposed;y called
Needle's Eye. One needed to bow to enter. This seems to make sense
in context of the saying as one must bow and scrape before the gods
to enter Elysium, and that goes for the rich as well as the poor.
Some scholars have suggested that the word camel (êÜìçëïí) is in
fact a mis-reading of the Greek original, and should instead read
rope (êÜìéëïí) or cable, in fact, a rather hefty rope that was used to
stitch boats together. This cable was passed through the eye of a very
large needle with the needle then passed through the wood of the boat,
the rope dutifully following and stitching together the boat. It was
difficult to get the rope through the needle's eye, for sure, but not
impossible. Indeed, it was necessary if one wished to bind the boat
together.
In either case, the idea of the rich man entering heaven becomes a
matter of degree of difficulty, rather than impossibility.

That is a deliberate misreading of the plain meaning of the saying. Jesus
taught that those who put God first, and depended wholly on Him, would
receive what they needed -- no more and no less. (Note the contrast with the
Old Testament, in which worldly wealth is seen as mark of God's blessing.)
When Peter needed money to pay his taxes, he was supplied with the exact
amount -- no more, no less. Personal wealth has no place in Jesus's
theology.

If you still object, remember Jesus's advice to the wealthy young man.

If one wants to interpret this syaing, it needs to be in the context of
"wealth". The spiritual meaning is that "wealth" includes attachment to
worldly things, which have to be put aside.

And how does one determine the "plain meaning" of a mistranslated
saying? If you're Catholic, you make a mash of things by taking a word
that means "young woman" in the Hebrew of Isaiah, mistranslate that
word into the Greek of the Septuigant into a word that means "virgin"
and, viola! an entire virgin birth dogma is let loose on the world,
pace the "plain meaning" of the word in the original Hebrew! If you're
a Gospel writer, you compound the mistake by transferring it into your
account of the Jesus myth (if you're Mark, you don't bother talking
about the birth at all).

As to your belief that "Jesus taught that those who put God first,
and depended wholly on Him, would receive what they needed -- no more
and no less." Ah, yes. Matthew tells us that god takes care of the
sparrows, and that he is mindful of the death of every one of
them...and that humans are worth more than sparrows, so we should be
amazed at how much more god loves humans over sparrows. Except that
the majority of sparrows who even make it out of the nest die horrible
deaths of starvation, disease and as lunch for predators within months
of their birth. Hey, now THAT'S some lookin' out for!

Note to the sparrows - if you're depending on god for protection, you
might want to consider upping your life insurance coverage. ;)
