Yes, we can. Haydn lived in a particular society, and wrote other works.
We can deduce his intent. I'll have more to say about this tomorrow.

Well, you can say more and I'll happily read it, but I have to admit
that I'm skeptical you're going to convince based on anything you've
written so far. I can't imagine what Haydn's other works or what the
particular society in which he lived could have to do with being able
to deduce what his feelings were about performances of his work more
than 100 years after his death.

Are you suggesting that all artists work in a vacuum? That artists only
influence the world around them, and are /not/ influenced /by/ it?
