And his answer may have been, "There's no way for me to know Haydn's
intent." Indeed, unless a composer left notes about his intent or was
interviewed, we can't know.
Yes, we can. Haydn lived in a particular society, and wrote other works. We
can deduce his intent. I'll have more to say about this tomorrow.
