There are really two issues here: the quality of the downloaded files,
and the quality of the playback equipment. For a lot of people, mp3/320
gives extremely good quality sound and is, I think also for a lot of
folks, indistinguishable from CD quality. I'm perfectly OK with mp3/320
myself, although I prefer the greater depth and transparency one gets
with lossless formats like FLAC or Apple Lossless.

Except that in most cases, you don't hear that "greater depth and
transparency" unless you know (or think) that you are listening to a
lossless file ;-)

Don't fool yourself! know it's very easy to fool oneself. I have also
taken part of very extensive blind listening tests and learned where
my limitations are. And those of a lot of other highly trained ears.
There is no "greater depth and transparency" to lossless compared to
mp3/320. That totally depends on the content anyway. There are some
very slight artifacts that you can *sometimes* hear although I doubt
that at your age, you can hear most of these at all (sorry, but that's
a fact of life). Which is why I said that I absolutely prefer lossless
just for "peace of mind".
