I'm just getting accustomed to Ms. Bayley's reviews. Her overall views of
what constitute "good" and "bad" performances are similar to mine, but not
having heard any of the performances she's reviewed, I remain open as to
whether her actual judgements match mine.
I am, however, suspicious of someone who says they're "very fond" of the
Emerson Beethoven SQs. The early ones are played so fast, and with so little
wit or feeling, that they leave a rather bad taste in one's mouth, spoiling
one's appreciation of the later works, which are better-done.
I have four sets of the Beethoven SQs, and I'm not sure any of them really
inspire me.
