Re: PRISTINE: Margaret Harshaw's Wagner, live in Boston with Munch in 1955

A recent analysis of some BSO broadcasts from 1952-53 leads one to speculate
that the pitch was indeed A=444 Hz as late as 1953. The analysis was done by
Aaron Snyder. The usual 120 Hz power supply hum/ripple on tapes of
broadcasts was found to be higher than 120 Hz. When the hum was adjusted to
120 Hz, then A became 444 Hz.

Notes on the recording:

This remarkably well-preserved taped recording was drawn from the
collection of Leslie Austin, on of a number generously offered it to
Pristine for possible restoration and release. With the exception of one
short moment in the final piece where FM radio interference was briefly
apparent, my task was relevatively simple - some XR re-equalisation, a
little hum and hiss filtering and a small degree of pitch correction to
A440 was just about all this excellent recording required.

During Koussevitzky's tenure, the Boston Symphony tuned to an A that
has been variously reported as 444 or 445. From every report, above
440. I have long wondered what happened when Munch became Music
Director. Have you found out?

The very bright sound of the orchestra during his time leads one to
speculate that he preserved that high tuning; but I have no evidence.

According to oboist Ralph Gomberg, who joined the BSO just after Munch
arrived, it remained at 444 for the first couple of years. He doesn't
say exactly when, or how far, it eventually came down.
