|He's been complaining about that for a long long time. He seems
|confused about the nature of the problem, which is that in standard
|repertoire there are ALWAYS competitive interpretations that are better
|than his. Not merely different, but stylistically far superior.

Hamelin has an enormous output. The chances that he'll be one of the top
five performers of every piece he records in the standard repertoire
aren't that good. That's the reason why I believe that he should stick
to lesser known material and only record standard repertoire when he is
certain that he has something new to say.

| ...
|I'm not trying to resurrect an ancient recurring rmcr topic about
|nationalist interpretation, but am pointing at his apparent lack of
|understanding that he's not operating in a stylistic and interpretative
|vacuum, and that yes, there's more to music than merely nailing the
|notes in such a way that it won't disturb the blue-haired crowd with
|all the money. In an odd way, he's like the pianistic version of one
|of those old-timey radio announcers who had a beautifully nuanced voice
|and quite incredible diction, but you really wouldn't really want to
|see them doing Tennessee Williams or Sam Beckett, all the same.

You do him injustice. The quality of Hamelin's interpretations is uneven
but there is almost always more to it than just great finger work and
good taste.
