Hello all,

Here is a small addition/contribution to the recent Coppola uploads –
special thanks to Heiko – and a promized one. Well I was happy to find
this very fantastic version of Ravel´s Bolero some time ago and  now
am able to post it here. A bit Click-repaired and sound-enhanced, all
sides joined carefully. Please find here this first recording of the
Bolero made January 8. 1930.

Thanks! Very nice. I already had this but downloaded it anyway. It
really is very interesting to listen to. It is surprising how little
(if any) vibrato the wind players use. The strings seem to use vibrato
judiciously, but not on all notes (sometimes it is hard to tell
because of the distortion). I always get a kick out the trombone when
I hear this recording, the way he slides all over the place. But it
appears that only part of that is "style", part of it seems to be that
he can't actually play clean legato passages. Everything is either
smeared or non-legato, with each note tongued.

Thanks for your comment. As far as I remember Ravel´s own recording
some years later has similar striking habits, esp. the wind
instruments. I will check out this and also Kletzki´s early recording
of the piece - another post though.

Wasn't Ravel's recording made the next day with the same orchestra?
