That's your opinion. There might be other who are interested in the
music.

And some of us who are interested in having the keepsake, as well as
listening to the music. But believe it or not, I'm actually talking
about maximizing sales -- the want-the-keepsake and want-the-music
crowds, while certainly not congruent, are not mutually exclusive
either.

For example look at what the Philadelphia Orchestra did: They issued
their big box, and then, some years later, have made some few of the
performances therefrom purchasable as downloads.

The way the big boxes have worked is simple: You get a variety of
different items, with different conductors and soloists presenting a
cross-section of live performances (and in some cases studio recordings)
in order to sucker, er, draw the potential buyer in. Thus there might
be perhaps three or four "must have" items evident to the music lover
before he buys; and then once he has listened to the set, he has found
much else to like as well. I know that has happened to me with every
single one of the big boxes.

You left out the grant(s) from some big donors or a foundation otherwise
I doubt these would make any money.

A good point; and which would they be more likely to underwrite, a project
which would create a premium, collectible, limited-edition keepsake, or
just a bunch of downloads?
