For the little that's worth, John, I agree with much of your insight
in "what would be needed" in the beginning of the 4th Ballade. In the
very beginning, you have only the repeated Gs, then some middle
"filling," then left hand [which is thematic, by the way, see
below***] comes in, then the "filling" gets multiple rather than
single pitches....
HOWEVER, I indeed like a quasi-steady/simple/somewhat-Mozartesque
playing there... as musical events multiply and all, one still wants
to hear that uniquely insistent "G G G G G G G G G *G*" as the main
thread of the music, enriched by what else is happening, but not
overwhelmed (or downright chopped) by it.
I don't think though that nobody does it or "gets" it... it would be a
little presumptuous of me. The type of simplicity we're talking about
isn't of the either/or type. There are degrees, and no famous pianist
is compelled to correspond to my/your/our inner ideal. I'd settle for
"simpler" ("subtler") rather than deploring the absence of a purified
ideal which may not even sound as good as various felicitous
"compromises" (hope that makes sense).
regards,
SG
*** the LH /////"E E D D C"///// in the beginning represents, I
believe,
-- an indisputable prefiguration of the secondary line in the F Minor
theme, when it comes back for the third time - the main theme remains
"C F E Bb Db" while the competing melody starts /////Ab Ab G G F/////
etc.
-- a proner-to-debate prefiguration as well of (much ornamented and a
little chromaticized, of course) the B Flat Major theme's initial
Urlinie: D (C#) C Bb
