And if that doesn't work, the next marketing ploy will be to place
them in brown paper bags and drop them from helicopters, hoping that
someone, anyone, will pick them up.
This, then, the fate of one of the greatest musicians of the past
century.
I find this sad. Very sad.
Some 20 years ago, I was surprised to be able to buy a new paperback
copy of Baudelaire's "Les fleurs du mal" for 13 French Francs, which
is less than 2 Euros. It was much cheaper than anything by any modern
author, most probably because of the abscence of legal implications in
publishing it. Today various paperpack editions of the book can be
seen between 1.43 and 3.99 Euros at amazon.fr.
It is comparable to the prices we now see for "classic" recordings and
it hasn't diminished Baudelaire's status nor has it led to his
abscence from the shelves.
Oistrahk having been a performer, demand for his interpretations of
works otherwise present by other performers is bound to be lower than
that for the works themselves and his being reissued at any price is a
happier fate than most of his colleagues will have.
