I got them quite inexpensively a couple of years on ebay in the
Readers' Digest CD issues. It's seven discs altogether, packaged in
two cases and called The Beethoven Treasury. In addition to the
symphonies, you get the violin concerto in the Gruenberg/Horenstein
recording, the Emperor in the Firkusny/Kempe recording, the Pathetique
and Moonlight sonatas (with Ann Schein and Earl Wild respectively),
and a few other bits and pieces.
Sometimes people sell one or the other of the two boxes separately,
and I think Readers' Digest may have issued a few discs from the set
and also called that The Beethoven Treasury. So if you look for it on
ebay (as it will probably come up from time to time), make sure it's
all seven discs.
I think I spent under $15 for it including shipping. And I think it's
a great cycle.
I once took one of the Cheskys out of the library to compare. Was it
the 6th and 8th? Can't remember. Anyway, I didn't think that the
Chesky remastering was a huge improvement over the Readers' Digest
issue.
