This Reader's Digest set I have owned in several formats: on the
original RD label, as well as an audiophile German version from the
1980s or 1990s, on LP, as well as on CD. The CDs are on the Menuet
label, complete on 5 CDs: 160017-2 to 160021-2. I also own two of the
symphonies (Nos. 2 & 5 together with Leonore Overture No. 3) on Chesky
CD 17. The Chesky brothers did an audiophile job on their release, as
they did on the Wild/Horenstein Rachmaninoff Picos. Menuet is very
likely less than audiophile, that is to say, in the use of tape
copies, the transfer equipment used, and so on. I haven't compared
them strictly, of course; I am only basing my comments on the
cheapness of the entire product. Menuet was distributed in the USA by
Qualiton Imports, Ltd, in New York. My copies still bear their little
silver stickers.
The Chesky sound a bit better than the Menuet, though of course (as you might
say) Chesky didn't alter one note.
There's at least one Leibowitz recording that showed up on Menuet but not
Chesky, his Schubert 9th; if Chesky still does that sort of thing, it would be
nice if they got around to it some day - an exciting performance.
