Not really. Simply miked recordings can be fairly realistic.


In fact the term HiFi was introduced at a time when recording, storage
and distribution, and playback were much below a "fairly realistic"
level. A lot of the chain since then was drastically improved. The
electrical part of the chain now is good. The first part, acoustical
environment for recording and microphones, and the last part, speakers
and acoustic environment during playback, still are a problem.

Even at best, reproduction of an ensemble or even a single instrument,
with two or more speakers is "fairly realistic".

The audiophile approach, that often focusses on the part that already is
good but is easily accessible to the end user, by eg. speaker cables
that reduces skin effects, power cords or directly heated cathodes, are
not very successful. The only things that can be done at that level are
speakers (and placement) and listening room acoustics.

Have you ever made your own recordings? Until you have, don't pass
judgement.
