Fabbriciani: Extinction of the Glaciers
a work for hyperbase flute (his own
version of the instrument - are there others?), wherein I still can't
tell what one sounds like. Very visceral and compelling listeing to.
I'm sure I'll listen to it again in the ear future...(on Col Legno)
British Horn Concertos: by Arnold, Jacob, Bowen, Gipp with David Pyatt
h/LPO conducted by Braithwaite. (Lyrita)
The Gipp is my favorite of them all, wonderful playing and interesting
listening - I was not impressed by the others
The Fountain (soundtrack) featuring the Kronos Quartet) - sorry I bought
(18.98 list) this 44 minute Nonesuch cd. It didn't sound as good or
interesting as the portions I heard whie browsing at Virgin
Gershwin's Porgy and Bess synphonic picture and Grofe's Grand canyon
Suite -
such a trashy work, my second hearing in 50 years - this by
Dorati/Detroit (London)
The Porgy is always a joy to hear and this early digital recording
serves it well, but I still have a soft spot or the old Dorati MSO on
Merury mono
Dukas:
Fanfare, Poeme Danse "La Peri"
Symphony in C
Sorcecer's Apprentice
Fournet, Nederland Radio-Symphony (Denon) - this compilation of the 3
works is marvelous and superbly done but the engineering doesn't serve
Peri's lush scoring (again IMO) - I grew up with
the unnaturally close, dry sounding Ansermet on Stereo Treasury. Of the
two I prefer Fournet...
Roussel: 2nd Symphony and other works
on a Naxos cd with Stephane Deneve/Royal Scottish National Orchestra
- very good sound and the Suite in F is especially a delight to hear
again
