I think that a lot of people found its rather cynical take on the "What
if Hitler had never been born" alternate history genre somewhat offensive,
but I thought that it was cleverly done.

No. My younger brother was the big Keith Laumer fan. I could never figure
out where I was supposed to start in the Laumer canon.
