Re: Marantz CD Players

If you do this it is easy to eventually add capacity.
If you start with a 750 and a 1,000GB pair you only "see" 750GB.
But when you replace the 750 with another 1,000 you see 1,000GB.

This is somewhat misleading . . .

So, an important post-note to my comments in case someone is
following along:

There are two variations of how to get to use the extra space
achieved by adding bigger drives:

A. The common garden variety Intel RAID controller (available on
many better quality PCs) does not have an **automatic** way to
use the extra size. The only way it seems is to make an 'image'
backup to a big external hard-disk, reset the RAID to suit your
new drives, and then copy the image back (using StorageCraft IT
Edition for example).

B. More serious RAID systems have software to 'Expand' and
'Extend' their arrays auto-magically. These are normally in
'server' class computers, and take a long time to happen but do
it with minimal if any downtime. The final step is to add another
partition in the extra space (via Windows Control Panel >
Administrator Tools > Disk Manager) or to 'expand' the last old
partition with a utility like DISKPART.

Unless you have access to a trusted IT expert familiar with the
tools mentioned, it is probably best to buy a huge pair of disks
in the first place and expect to leave them as is (although
replacing one at a time to reduce risk of failure is relatively
easy), thus making use of the Intel RAID-1 facility to protect
you from a single hard disk failure.

If your computer does not have the Intel RAID-1 capability
consider buying a card to do this (an Adaptec 1220SA for
example).

Jim Kelly
