Recordings are usually disappointing in this piece in comparison to
any live experience because of the concentration one is able to have
in the concert hall. Op.111 is special that way, I think.

Yes, you may be right, which is why the Barenboim DVD is much more
powerful than the CD.

I just listened to Arrau, and it is up there as well. I wonder, this
might be a work where Paul Lewis would be effective.

Any thoughts on the two Uchida recordings of the late sonatas?

I'm imprinted on Michelangeli's op. 111 and it remains my favorite.
Also on DVD (Euroarts).

How sad, John!

A lesson in musical dehydration.

Please, try to eradicate that interpretation from your mind. Learn the
piece yourself. Whatever works.

But you near treatment fast.

Each to his own, but other performances seem earthbound in
comparison. If you want more gritty struggle, blood, sweat and tears,
then I can understand that Michelangeli is not for you. He emphasizes
the transcendental, celestial aspects of the piece, which is valid for
me.

Also, after the imprint of Michelangeli, many other pianists sound
technically belabored and often plodding, when to my mind, the music
should take flight.

There's certainly no single way of interpreting this piece with some
magical
"seal of approval" on it Tom. I already know that conventional
wisdom, or the old-boy network of music critics give Serkin, Arrau,
Kempf and Co. the seal of authenticity, but I've never formed my
opinions from consensus.
